This week we meet Kate Carter, Officer-in-Charge of the Spinney Day Nursery Hoole.

Kate ran her own Newsagents for 20 years, but after helping out at an after school club, she decided that childcare was the career she wanted to pursue. Kate has worked with The Spinney for 10 years and is in charge of the day-to-day running of our Hoole nursery. She has a raft of qualifications including a foundation degree in Early Years practice.

She also has three boys of her own and four Grandchildren – and believes that being a mother for 30 years is the best experience there is!

How long have you worked in Childcare?

15 years officially, but my eldest son is 30 now, so my childcare experience is vast!

Why did you choose to join the Spinney?

I decided to join the Spinney because it was small (only 36 children back then) and had a strong family ethos which gave it a warm, friendly atmosphere.

What’s your favourite part of the day?

When I can get out of the office and read a story or play a game with the children. The best part of my day is when I have organised a plan and it works well.

What’s the best thing about working with the Spinney?

The best thing about working here is that no two days are the same and being Officer in Charge I can change the plan to suit the children’s needs when I need to.

What is the funniest thing one of the children has ever done/said?

One of the children was telling me that at the weekend his brother had fallen off his bike. But not to worry because the bike, which has gears, was ok. I asked if his brother was ok and he said he was fine … but more importantly the bike was ok.

If you could be a Super Hero which one would you be?

Perhaps after a day with the children at the Spinney and an evening with my grandchildren, ‘Super Nannie’ would be right!

What’s your favourite children’s book?

‘Room on the Broom’. My favourite part is when the dragon wants witches and chips for his tea instead of fish & chips!
